Dear Parent/Guardian:

The purpose of this letter is to update you on COVID-19 issues as they relate to the Fallsburg Central School District. I realize there are many concerns in the school community due to the inundation of information from various media sources. The information below should address many of the questions and concerns that exist.

Important Points

  • There are still no confirmed cases of coronavirus in the district at this time. This is true at the time of this writing. The nature of this situation continues to be fluid and can change very quickly.
  • The district continues to monitor the situation, and is following the guidance of our local, state, and federal health departments and Sullivan County BOCES.
  • Following these basic hygiene practices are the best defense against the spread of illness:
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Stay home when you are sick.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Cleaning and disinfection of our buildings continues daily.
  • All busses that Fallsburg students ride are being cleaned and disinfected daily.

School Closure Update

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) recognizes the COVID-19 outbreak is affecting schools and communities across the state. NYSED and the State Department of Health issued updated guidance to school and community health officials regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which includes the requirement for schools to close for 24 hours if a student or staff member attended school prior to being confirmed as a positive COVID-19 patient. The school community will be notified should we have a confirmed case of COVID-19. If closure beyond 24 hours is required, further notifications will go out. Disinfection will take place during the closure in accordance with the New York State Department of Health guidelines. In the event of COVID-19 related school closures, we will use up our remaining snow days (6 at this time) and, if warranted, spring break days (6 at this time).

Additionally, our administrators and teachers are working together to create a plan that would allow for education to continue for students in the event that we have a long-term closure that exceeds the available 12 days (6 snow days and 6 spring break days). Once these plans are finalized we will share them with students and parents. To accomplish this in a timely manner, school will be on a two-hour delay schedule on Monday, March 16th. This two-hour delay will allow staff to plan for a long-term closure.

Impact on FCSD Upcoming Events

The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has stated that the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to it. Further, the CDC advises that we should avoid crowds. Risk of exposure to respiratory viruses like COVID-19 may increase in crowded settings if there are people in the crowd who are sick. In light of this guidance, we have planned to reduce instances where large groups of people gather in our district or where large groups gather in other places that involve our students and staff.

To that end we have reviewed all school events that are currently scheduled between now and the end of the school year in an effort to minimize non-essential exposure of students and staff to viruses like COVID-19. In that review we have considered recommendations to not send students and staff on trips to places that have confirmed cases of COVID-19.

While school administrators will be notifying students and their parents/guardians about specific event cancellations, I can tell you that, generally speaking we will not be sending our students and staff to other states and to many areas in the state where there will be large gatherings of people.

Current trips (at various levels and with various groups) are being canceled that were scheduled for the following destinations: New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, college campuses, Hershey Park, and many events around New York State and in neighboring states that involved large gatherings of students from different areas.

The spring sports season, at this time is scheduled to go on as planned (this may also change depending on new developments). While we have canceled track & field trips to New York City and Philadelphia, the spring sports schedule has remained intact at this time. If there are any other changes to the sports schedule our athletic director and coaches will notify affected students and families and we will make sure any changes are posted.

The school musical that is scheduled to take place on March 27th and 28th will be canceled. Instead we plan to showcase the musical for our students while school is in session.

Additionally, we will also be canceling use of our buildings by outside groups indefinitely. Unfortunately, we had planned to be a Census completion site from April through June but since we are minimizing building use to outside groups we will not be a Census site as previously planned.

We do have some big events taking place in June like our 6th grade and high school graduations. No decision has been made on those events at this time. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 updates as we get closer to June and we will evaluate the situation at that time.

This situation is far from ideal. I do realize that many people are disappointed with the cancelations that are taking place. However, these decisions are being made in the interest of protecting the health and safety of students, staff and community members.

Additional information about COVID-19 is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html, and the Department of Health: https://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/coronavirus/.

If COVID-19 exhibits greater severity, the Department of Health and the State Education Department may issue revised guidance and additional steps may be necessary. If there are any new steps to take and/or if there are additional cancelations, we will notify students and families as information becomes available.

Thank you for your attention, patience and support.

Sincerely,

Ivan J. Katz, Ed.D

Estimado padre / tutor:

Sinceramente,

Ivan J. Katz, Ed.D
Superintendente de Escuelas
