Volunteer Group Thrives at Fallsburg Central School District
“I have never been a part of a program with this much success so quickly,” exclaimed Superintendent Dr. Ivan Katz as he welcomed everyone to the spring meeting of Volunteers in the Classroom (VIC) Program on April 7. The many volunteers present at the FCSD Board Room expressed their happiness at helping out in the classroom over the past winter and fall months. Ms. Barbara Uhrie echoed others when she said, “I am grateful for the opportunity, and I love working with the kids.”
Board of Education member and a major proponent of the VIC Program Dr. Stephanie Phillips, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mathew Evans, Assistant Principal at Benjamin Cosor Elementary School David Viglione, and Fallsburg Jr/Sr High School Principal Michael Williams joined Dr. Katz with high praise and acknowledgement for the many volunteers that have been making a difference in the lives of the students and the teachers in the District. Feedback from teachers has been very positive.
The program has acquired some special benefits for the volunteers: an Agreement with Sullivan County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) can provide reimbursement for transportation costs with qualified volunteers at FCSD; on May 9, 2017 Every Person Influences Children (EPIC), as part of their partnership with FCSD, is providing a morning workshop tailored for community volunteers; and an anticipated grant from My Brother’s Keeper will cover resources to facilitate and coordinate more events to bring people into the school in support of community engagement.
