As part of the after school program on the BCES Trail, Project Director Leah Exner invited physical education teacher Ms. Kate Santoianni to speak with the students about hiking preparedness and safety. She loves to hike and knows a lot about being in the woods with proper equipment.
Ms. Santoianni came with lots of “show and tell” materials that included a paper, a metallic and a digital compass; hand warmers; backpack, water bottles, maps, a hammock, emergency blankets and sun block. She demonstrated how each piece of equipment worked and how useful it was to be properly outfitted when exploring nature’s beauty in the woods. She also addressed how to navigate carefully through rough terrain.
The physical education teacher’s outdoor skills and athletic skills were evident and provided a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn about these skills and how to use protective materials when out in nature. Her talk is a fine example of how the entire Fallsburg School District has cooperated on the BCES Trail Project to benefit the community and celebrate the outdoors.
