Steven Scheinman and Michael Weiner Inducted to Fallsburg Central School Hall of Fame
The Fallsburg Central School District is proud to announce their newest inductees to the school’s Hall of Fame: Michael Weiner and Dr. Steven Scheinman.
Michael Weiner has remained a fiercely active member of the Fallsburg school community for nearly forty years. Upon graduating in 1976, he had his eyes set on returning to Fallsburg to become a teacher. He earned a B.A. from SUNY Cortland in 1981 and soon after landed a substitute teaching job at Crystal Run Village in Middletown, New York. He also earned a chance to coach the Sullivan County Special Olympics soccer team, where they went on to win two state championships.
In 1985, Michael returned to Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School where he secured a full-time position as a Social Studies teacher. He also coached soccer, baseball, and volleyball throughout his teaching career. He went above and beyond to ensure his students reached their fullest potential by remaining active through voter registration drives and helping students secure athletic scholarships.
In addition to being an educator, Michael was also a member of the Town of Fallsburg Board for sixteen years and a Town Planning Board member for six years. One year after retiring from teaching in 2014, Michael was elected to the Fallsburg Board of Education. After many years of proud school board service, Michael will be retiring this June.
Dr. Steven Scheinman’s tenure as a physician and professor will leave a lasting impact for generations to come. After graduating from Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School in 1969, Steven earned an A.B. Summa Cum Laude from Amherst College. Soon after, he attended Medical School at Yale University and received his M.D. in 1977. He decided to pursue a career in Nephrology after completing a Fellowship in Nephrology at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
In 1984, Steven joined the Nephrology faculty at SUNY Upstate Medical University. His interest in Dent’s Disease, a rare genetic kidney disease that almost entirely affects males, has led to a revolutionary breakthrough. His laboratory was able to identify the X chromosome gene that causes the disease, which was considered a remarkable feat for its time. The discovery has earned Steven countless distinctions and awards and even international recognition within the medical community.
In addition to being a faculty member, Dr. Scheinman also served as Chief of Nephrology, vice president, and Dean of the College of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He then served as President and Dean of Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Pennsylvania from 2012 to 2016, as Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer for Geisinger School of Medicine from 2017 to 2021, and as Dean Emeritus for the Geisinger School of Medicine from 2021 to 2023.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on June 5, 2024 at the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School at 5:30 pm.
