Strengthening Families Workshop

Cornell Cooperative Extension will be bringing the Strengthening Families 10-14 family workshops to Fallsburg this Fall. The Strengthening Families 10-14 program is an evidence-based parent, youth, and family skills-building curriculum that:

-Prevents adolescent substance abuse and other behavioral problems 

-Strengthens parent and child communication skills 

-Increases academic success in youth 

The program consists of 7 consecutive weekly workshops and is intended for students ages 10-14 and their parents. The workshops will be bilingual and held in both English and Spanish. Free dinner will be provided for all attendees and free childcare will be provided for all additional children and siblings who are not participating in the program. Cornell Cooperative Extension can offer free transportation to and from the workshops on a limited basis. They will facilitate the workshops on Wednesday evenings from 4:30-6:00 PM at the Junior Senior high school (room numbers TBD) on the following dates:

Discipline is NOT a Dirty Word: A Virtual Series for Parents and Caregivers

Parenting is one of the most rewarding journeys, but it can also be one of the most challenging. To support parents and caregivers in navigating the ups and downs of raising children, Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County and Sullivan County are offering a free, four-week virtual program titled Discipline is NOT a Dirty Word.

This engaging series will provide families with practical tools, insights, and strategies for building stronger, healthier relationships with their children.

When: Thursdays, October 2, 16, 30, and November 13
Time: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
(Please note that classes are held every other week.)

What Will You Learn?

  • Understanding Your Child
    Explore child and brain development, temperament, and the reasons behind misbehavior.

  • Understanding Yourself Better
    Gain insights into parenting styles, co-regulation, resilience, and the importance of self-care.

  • Communication Strategies
    Learn techniques for active and reflective listening, using “I” statements, and strengthening everyday interactions.

  • Tools to Support Gentle Parenting
    Discover five practical tips to build a positive, nurturing relationship with your child.

The program is designed to be both accessible and affordable. The cost is $40 per family of two, with a $0 solidarity price option available for those unable to pay at this time.

Unpacking the Teen Years: A Supportive Parenting Series

The teenage years can feel overwhelming for many parents and caregivers. Yet, beneath the challenges lies an exciting period of growth, discovery, and transformation for young people. To help families navigate this stage, Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County and Sullivan County are offering Unpacking the Teen Years, a four-session virtual series designed to provide guidance, support, and practical tools.

When: Tuesdays, October 8, 22, and November 5, 19
Time: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
(Sessions are held every other week.)

What You’ll Learn

This series will focus on the unique dynamics of adolescence and how parents can support their teens through these pivotal years. Topics include:

  • Changes in Your Teen – Understanding the developmental shifts happening during adolescence.

  • Ways to Build Connectivity – Strengthening communication and trust with your teen.

  • Communication Strategies and Tools – Learning how to listen and talk effectively.

  • Challenging Behaviors and Red Flags – Recognizing when your teen needs additional support.

  • Building Relationships for the Future – Laying the foundation for a healthy parent-teen bond.

  • Positive Approaches – Discovering how encouragement and support benefit relationships.
