Next Monday at 11:00 a.m., the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School will be holding a mock drunk driving accident simulation at the central office parking lot. This event is designed to raise awareness among students about the dangers and consequences of driving while intoxicated. Our local emergency responders, along with some student actors, will be participating in the simulation.

Benjamin Cosor Elementary School held its third Principal's Award Ceremony of the year for students in grades 4, 5, and 6. The ceremony recognized students with four awards: the Excellent Attendance Award, the BUGS (Bringing Up Grades) Award, the Honor Roll, and the Superintendent's Honor Roll.

In late March, I notified the school community that the Governor of the State of New York was moving forward a proposal to ban the use of smartphones throughout the school day in public schools. With the newly enacted state budget, that proposal is now state law. We are planning for it as we speak since the time frame to get this accomplished is very short and the ban must be in place by this coming September.

The Benjamin Cosor Elementary School SGA will be hosting a cereal donation drive from May 12th to May 22nd. All donated cereal boxes will go directly to the food pantry located in Hurleyville and will be collected by Mr. Dworetsky. Please consider donating to support families in the Fallsburg community!

The Fallsburg Central School District is excited to announce its NYSPHSAA scholar-athletes for the 2024–2025 winter season. Each season, the NYSPHSAA honors teams and individuals who excel academically. To qualify as a scholar-athlete team, at least three-quarters of the team's members must have a grade point average of 90.00 or above.

Emily Mackerley, an eighth grader at the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School, has achieved more than most young, aspiring gymnasts could ever dream of. The purpose of this letter is to give you an update on our snow days and give back days.  At this time, the school district has four (4) snow days left on the schedule. Therefore, as noted in our adopted 2024-2025 school year calendar, school will be closed on the following days:

On March 27, 2025, more than fifty students at Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School received the Student-On-A-Roll (SOAR) Award. This honor is given to students who have shown remarkable improvement in attendance, behavior, and academics.

Governor Kathy Hochul today launched a new web portal to support access to vaccines and public health information in the wake of measles cases in New York State. The Governor joined State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald to update New Yorkers on the cases and encouraged everyone to ensure they are current on all recommended immunizations. There have been four total cases of measles in New York State so far this year, three in New York City and one in Suffolk County. None of the cases this year are related to each other or connected to the outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico. The risk of measles to New Yorkers from these outbreaks is low.

Petitions nominating candidates for the office of member of the Board of Education of the Fallsburg School District will be available in the Central Office beginning on March 20, 2025 between the hours of 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Petitions must be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the district. They must be returned to the District Clerk no later than 5:00 PM on April 21, 2025.

The SYDA Foundation generously donated $4,000 to the Fallsburg Central School District, continuing its decades-long tradition of support. Annabelle Baylin, a SYDA volunteer and educator, presented Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ivan Katz, with the check.

The Fallsburg JSHS Drama Club invites the school community to attend their performance of She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition on April 4th and 5th at 7 PM, and April 6th at 2 PM. Tickets are $7 per person and will be available for purchase at the door.

Benjamin Cosor Elementary School is excited to announce its Honor Roll and Superintendent’s Honor Roll recipients for the second marking period. Students who achieved Honor Roll earned an overall grade point average of 3.0–3.5, while those who achieved Superintendent’s Honor Roll earned a GPA of 3.6–4.0.

We invite our community members to complete the Diagnostic Tool for School and District Effectiveness (DTSDE) Survey. This survey is part of the New York State Education Department’s requirements for Focus Schools and Focus Districts. It gathers feedback on key areas, including curriculum, systems and organization, parent and community engagement, school leadership, social-emotional learning, and instruction.

Over the past several years, the Fallsburg Central School District has implemented countless changes to its cafeteria facilities. Some of these include introducing free fruit and vegetable cart stands, including locally grown food on the menu, and renovating equipment and storage spaces. But even with the new slate of improvements, there is always room to grow and stay ahead of the curve.

Sullivan BOCES and Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster are providing medication storage and destruction tools to families throughout Sullivan County.

Pre-K and Kindergarten registration for the 2025-2026 school year is coming soon at Fallsburg Central School District. Registration for Pre-K will run from March 10 to March 28 and April 7 to May 2 for Kindergarten. To be eligible for registration, Pre-K students must be 4 years old and Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2025.

Not all heroes wear capes, but Ruth Mahnken of the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School certainly earned one. Thanks to her selfless efforts, two hand-made closets filled with school supplies now reside at the elementary and high school buildings. She finally fulfilled her mission to provide basic necessities for students in need. Her upbringing and commitment to community service played a key role in bringing this project to light

I am aware of concerns that have arisen in our school community due to the federal immigration initiative that has received much press this past week. This news is unsettling to many students, families and staff members. The purpose of this letter is to advise you of a change in the school district calendar. Thursday, February 13, 2025, will now be a Superintendent’s Conference Day and students will not attend school on that day. Friday, February 14, 2025, will be a give back day, meaning that school will be closed for students and staff.

It came to my attention this morning that there was an alleged gun threat made on a school bus by a Fallsburg student who attends school in an alternate school setting (outside of the Fallsburg Central School District). The police were contacted immediately and began an investigation. We are excited to announce the opening of an on-site mental health clinic, located at the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School. The clinic is provided by Astor Services and will operate from 8am to 4pm daily. Students from grades Pre-K-12 and their families (if needed) are eligible for services.

On January 16, 2025, nearly sixty students at the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School were recognized with the Student-On-A-Roll Award, also known as the SOAR Award. This award is presented to students who have demonstrated significant progress regarding attendance, behavior, and academics.

In honor of National School Bus Safety Week, many of our elementary students took part in the Rolling V. Bus Corp School Bus Safety Poster Contest. Each of them were tasked with creating a poster that best represents safety practices when riding or entering a school bus. The Fallsburg robotics team participated in a regional tournament last Saturday at Mount Academy. They competed against 39 schools from across southern New York and finished ninth overall in the tournament.

Benjamin Cosor Elementary School is excited to announce their elementary Honor Roll and Superintendent’s Honor Roll recipients for the first marking period. On December 9, 2024, the Fallsburg Central School District Board of Education honored John Halchak Jr. for being posthumously inducted into the Wall of Coaching Distinction.

Earlier today, The Fallsburg Police Department received information regarding a non-specific threat that was made on social media and shared with at least one student. This information came to the attention of the Fallsburg Police Department as a result of a parent who saw something and then said something to the Police Department in a very timely fashion. The Fallsburg Police Department and I received information late last night regarding online threats made on social media regarding the Fallsburg Central School District. This information came to our attention from parents, students and staff who had the presence of mind to say something after they saw something on social media. These threats, which mention shooting, are circulating the social media platform Snapchat. I was just informed by the Fallsburg Police Department that an arrest has been made relative to these threats and there is no longer a threat to the school district. ​

On June 24, 2024, the Fallsburg Central School District held their annual Sixth Grade Moving Up Ceremony at Benjamin Cosor Elementary School. Each of the 107 sixth grade students were recognized for completing their elementary education and transitioning into becoming middle school students. The Town of Fallsburg free Basketball program focus is on fundamentals in the majority of the practice time. This registration for basketball drills is for beginners, specifically designed for kids under 12 years old. They’re responsible for providing resources for teachers, promoting an inclusive school environment, and improving the quality of education. However, in recent years, districts throughout the Hudson Valley region have seen a decline in certified and available school administrator candidates. On October 17, 2023, the Fallsburg Central School District held a memorial ceremony on the front lawn of the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School to honor the many teachers, administrators, and staff members who have passed. Our students have access to many social-emotional supports within our school buildings to support them when the things they see and hear can be unsettling and scary. Mel Feldman and Paul Marsden received the highest honor that Fallsburg Athletic Coaches can attain when they were inducted into the FCSD Wall of Coaching Distinction on January 18, 2023, at the Board of Education meeting. The purpose of this update is to share with you guidance for schools, school districts as the statewide school mask mandate was lifted on March 2, 2022. Due to the uncertainty of the upcoming weather forecast, the winter ice-skating event scheduled for this Saturday, February 5, 2022, at BCES, from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM, is canceled. I am writing to you with an update on our Winter Concert. As you know, the show was originally planned for this past December. As a result of that investigation the police have determined that the alleged gun threat was not credible.

This morning we received information that one student at BCES tested positive for Covid-19. The student was not in the building and no further actions need to be taken.

Today we received information that a student at BCES, who is currently quarantined, tested positive for COVID-19 today. That student was last in the building on Monday (11/1/21). At this time, no contact tracing or further action is needed.

One major change the Athletic department is excited about is online student registration through, FamilyID. Recognizing that the Covid-19 pandemic has undermined the learning of all of our children, with its greatest harm on those students who can least afford it, we all want to see our schools fully open and all children able to attend school in-person. To be eligible a student must have a valid physical on file, and complete and pass a health update. For the past several years the after-school program has been funded by the Empire After-School program. The grant has afforded many special programs and opportunities for student learning. Good News! We have updated the 2020-2021 school calendar. Days that we previously considered "snow days' will now be days that students are engaged in remote learning.
